History of Tara's Tipperary Tavern

What stands today as Tara’s Tipperary Tavern is a pub with nearly 100 years of tradition. Over the years, Tara’s Tipperary Tavern has seen its fair share of history and celebrity, and in that time, Tara’s has stood strong through Prohibition, fourteen Presidential administrations, and more hurricanes than you can shake a shillelagh at!  Tara’s has also hosted such luminaries as Marlon Brando,  many artists from Matunuck by the Sea, as well as senators and congresspersons from New England.

Tara is proud to carry on a Matunuck pub tradition that goes back to the 1930s, when the pub was owned by the Cavanaugh family.  It’s believed that in those dark days of Prohibition, Cavanaugh’s stayed in business as a speakeasy, keeping the taps flowing despite laws to the contrary.

The pub was run by one of the Cavanaugh daughters, Veronica, and her husband, John McCallister, until 1976, when they sold the business to Vin Joyce, Sr. and his wife, Theresa, re-christening Cavanaugh’s as The Joyce Family Pub.  Following the tradition of keeping the business in the family, Vin Sr. sold the pub to his son, Vin Jr, in 2004.  By that point, Tara had already been at the Joyce Family Pub for four years, providing superior service and making customers feel at home.

Tara took over the business in 2008 and is proud to carry on the fine tradition of good food, good music, and perfectly-poured pints.  Come by, have a drink with us, enjoy a delicious meal, and enjoy some live music on the beach!
