“Where Tipperary leads, Ireland follows.”
--Thomas Davis, editor of The Nation newspaper, ca. 1840 Tara’s Tipperary Tavern has its origins in County Tipperary, Ireland. One of Ireland’s largest counties, Tipperary embodies the best of Ireland, with its friendly people, fertile fields, ancient castles, and stunning mountain vistas. In fact, some even consider Tipperary to be Ireland’s heart and soul; just look at the quote above!
If Tipperary is Ireland’s heart and soul, Tara’s hometown of Clonmel (Cluain Meala) is Tipperary’s own heart. Situated along the banks of the beautiful River Suir, the ‘honey meadow’ of Clonmel is surrounded by the apple orchards that make the famous Magners Cider. Clean air, fresh cider, and a beautiful landscape…you couldn’t pick a better place for a pub.
Tara’s family would agree. In fact, keeping a pub is in Tara’s blood. Her great-grandmother was the original owner of Clonmel’s McGrath’s Pub, which became The Horseman Lounge when Tara’s mum and da’ took over the operation. Having grown up above the pub, Tara was destined to enter the family business, and that’s just what she did!
When she came to America, Tara worked in Irish taverns in New York and Rhode Island before finding her new pub home at The Joyce Family Pub in Matunuck. Tara acquired the business in 2008, and is proud to carry on the traditions of serving good food and the perfect pint while surrounded by live music and excellent company. Not only is Tara following in her family’s footsteps, but she’s maintaining a Matunuck pub tradition that goes back to the 1930s.
Rhode Islanders are proud to claim Tara’s Tipperary Tavern as their own piece of Ireland; come on in and enjoy a taste of the Emerald Isle with us! |
